MBOMBELA – A by-election has been announced for Ward 17 on August 12. This follows the recent resignation of former councillor, Mr Werner le Grange.
He resigned as councillor and the party’s chief whip in council on June 30 to take up the position of provincial managing director of the DA in Mpumalanga.
Le Grange joined party politics full-time in 2013 when he came from nowhere to win a by-election in the ward. He said he hoped to use his new position to make every effort to help build a society based on freedom, fairness and opportunity.
“In my new position, I will be responsible for the operational management and strategic growth for the party in Mpumalanga and must therefore relinquish my role as ward councillor in order to fulfil this task.
“I would like to express my sincere appreciation to (the residents of ward 17) for having afforded me the opportunity to have represented you in the Mbombela council. It was a great honour and privilege to have been entrusted to serve my community and to have been part of the positive turnaround of Mbombela Local Municipality in the past year.”
Le Grange has been replaced as chief whip in the council by Mr Steven Schormann. The party’s candidate for the ward has been announced as Ms Sanley van der Merwe.
Ward 17 includes Piet Retief Street up to Bateleur Estate, Steiltes and Nelsville. Voting stations in the area are Lowveld Country Club, Laerskool Bergland and Nelsville Community Hall.
