Mbombela Attorney Association’s annual bowls day proves lawyers are not boring

Attorneys are stereotypically referred to as not-so-nice people.

Although some lawyer jokes go around from time to time, there are two problems with these – lawyers don’t think these jokes are funny and the rest of us don’t think they are jokes.

However, the Mbombela Attorneys Association dispelled many a mean attorney joke when it hosted its annual bowls day on Thursday. It transpired that members are a fun lot with a collective sense of humour that will keep you in stitches for hours.

Contrary to popular belief, the profession has a heart as well – one that beats for our children.

The bowls day kicked off with a very special game. More than 20 pupils of KaMagugu Inclusive School were invited to try their hand at the game from 12:00. They were instructed by therapist Debbie Cresswell and Annelien de Kock and Koen Koekemoer of the association.

Another round of bowls offered local law practitioners to compete against one another during a rather amusing measure of ball skills.

Drinks, snacks and dinner were served to this jovial group of people, who each made a financial contribution towards the event. Local businesss also participated to raise funds for the school. “The day served as a money-raising endeavour in aid of the school,” De Kock explained. “KaMagugu Inclusive School is a special-needs school. In fact, there are only 30 schools of its kind in South Africa.

“The learners who attend have mild to moderate learning barriers, or have a high need for support,” she said. The fact that our region is fortunate enough to have one of these schools, motivated the association to offer its support to the institution. The fun lasted for hours and allowed the city’s legal experts to catch up out of the courtroom for a change.
