Reckless turn on N4 results in accident

At least 15 people were injured on Sunday evening when a bakkie, carrying nine passengers, made an illegal turn.

ALKMAAR – At least 15 people were injured on Sunday night when a minibus collided with a bakkie on the N4 near the Nkomazi filling station.

At least nine people had been seated on the back of the bakkie. Three were seriously injured, including the drivers of both vehicles.

The accident occurred at about 19:15. According to eyewitnesses, the bakkie exited the filling station and attempted to make a right turn towards Mbombela, crossing the lane leading towards Johannesburg in the process.

The eyewitnesses said the driver did not stop to check whether it was clear and just continued to make the turn.

At that moment, a minibus approaching from Mbombela’s side hit the bakkie, sending the passengers on the back flying. As far as could be established, all 10 of the bakkie’s occupants were injured, of which three seriously.

The impact caused the minibus to veer over the oncoming carriageway, crashing through the barricade and landing in a ditch. At least five of its occupants were injured.

The injured were all taken to Rob Ferreira Hospital.
