Hawks investigating appointments in Mbombela

General workers were appointed in the municipality in May.

MBOMBELA – The Hawks are investigating appointments made in the local municipality.

Lowvelder had previously reported that the general workers appointed in April over contract workers was one of the reasons for a march by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to the municipal offices organised in May.

While Mr Collen Sedibe, the party’s provincial chairman claimed this weekend that the special investigations unit had raided the municipal offices and confiscated documents as part of an investigation into fraud and corruption, this has been refuted by Mbombela Local Municipality (MLM).

Spokesman for MLM, Mr Joseph Ngala, said no documents had been confiscated.

“There was never a raid at the offices of the municipality on the above-mentioned dates.

“However, two officials from the said unit did come to the municipality on Thursday, indicating that they were investigating the appointment of general workers as previously reported in the media.

“There were no documents seized from MLM’s offices. There was nothing mentioned on the awarding of tenders in their investigation.”

At the time of going to press, national spokesman for the Hawks, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi could not confirm the incident.
