Former Onderberger flies Aussie flag at duathlon championships
"Overall it was a great experience, which I can add to the experiences I had competing in the Duathlon World Champs for South Africa"
A former resident of Komatipoort and ex member of Komatipoort Athletics Club, Jeremy Clapham, took part in the Duathlon World Champs on Sunday representing his new country, Australia.
Clapham said after emigrating to Down Under in 2009, he had always had in mind that once he became a citizen he would like to qualify for Australia in duathlon.
Clapham, his wife Tania (daughter of Arthur and Ermine Flemix of Komatipoort) and their son Sheldon, became citizens in 2014. He set his mind on trying to qualify from then on. In October he managed to qualify for the world champs in Adelaide.
His family went with to support him at the Duathlon World Champs held on October 18.
He had a really good race and finished 22nd out of 31 in his age group 50 to 54, beating athletes from the United States of America, Great Britain, Japan, Brazil and Australia.
“Overall it was a great experience, which I can add to the experiences I had competing in the Duathlon World Champs for South Africa,” Clapham said.
