Six alternative ways to stay hydrated

With temperatures hovering around the high thirties, Lowvelders need to up their water intake to keep hydrated. But what if you can stand plain water? We have a few ideas for you.

Milk

Feeling a bit parched? Keep a cold flask with milk handy or even grab a flavoured one at the shop (remember that those contain sugar). Milk is an excellent source of calcium and reportedly also great for hydration and recovery after exercise.

 Flavoured water

Give still or sparkling water a refreshing taste by adding some mint, sliced fruit or vegetables.

Tea

Rooibos tea is packed with antioxidants and refreshing. If you prefer it cold, why not make 3 cups of tea, let it cool in the fridge, then add one cup of juice (your choice of flavour) for some delicious iced tea. Add a teaspoon of dried mint or a few slices of lemon for a flavour twist.

If Rooibos isn’t for you, then just substitute it with your favourite English, flavoured or green tea.

Smoothies

These can be a great way to combine water, milk and fruit and veg in one tasty glass. Find simple, healthy recipe or experiment by combining your favourite ingredients with cream, ice or yoghurt.

Fruit and vegetables

They are great sources of vitamins and minerals and taste great to boot. Recommended fruits and vegetables include watermelon, cucumber, strawberries, tomatoes and lettuce.

Coconut water

If you love coconut, this is the drink for you. It’s low in carbohydrates but rich in potassium, plus it’s banting-approved. It’s also a great alternative to energy drinks as it helps to hydrate you after exercise.

Remember to adjust your fluid intake according to your body’s needs. If you’re thirsty, be sure to drink enough or if some fluids don’t satisfy your thirst, avoid them and try something else. When in doubt, rather drink a large glass of water, as this is still the best way to keep hydrated.
