Runners want more women to join them

"I encourage other girls in my area to join me when I am training. I have already recruited a few. In sport women work just as hard as men, so they deserve equal opportunities. It's time for us to take a stand and prove that female runners are also capable of achieving the unexpected," said Thoala.

Tired of basking in the sun every day doing nothing and being couch potatoes, two women from Riba Cross are urging their peers to join them in running marathons.

Koketso Thoala (23) and Promise Phakoala (17) are passionate about road running.

The two have recently competed in various marathons throughout the country. “We are now preparing ourselves for the Icebreaker marathon in Witbank, we want to win this race, ” they boasted.

The duo said they were disappointed with the few local female who participated in the recent Comrades Marathon. “We are now planning on participating in this ultimate race.”

The athletes told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that they run more than 20 kilometres daily and they came to realise that running reduced stress and kept them healthy.

“I encourage other girls in my area to join me when I am training. I have already recruited a few. In sport women work just as hard as men, so they deserve equal opportunities. It’s time for us to take a stand and prove that female runners are also capable of achieving the unexpected,” said Thoala.
