Bergvlam proves that preparations is key

Hoërskool Bergvlam's 12th annual English Best Speaker Competition saw the best of the best take part in the prestigious event.

This occasion forms part of the pupils’ preparations for the Eisteddfod which took place in August.

Winners in the junior category were Erize de Lange, Bonga Ngcongwane and Rifumo Sithole whereas Imke Smit, Vanessa Modise and Sally Etsebeth took top honours in the senior category.

Pupils could choose from the four topics, “If you run with wolves you will learn how to howl”, “Town life versus farm life”, “Be the change” and “School is not an education”. The master of ceremonies, Jessica Lopez, made the occasion interesting by using quotes from famous and noble writers.

“A speaker should approach his preparation not by what he wants to say, but by what he wants to learn,” she quoted Todd Stocker.

According to the school’s marketing manager, Mandy Barnard, the event is a tradition which started many years ago.

The adjudicators were Santie Barrish, Kathy Holton and Lorraine Harris.

It also included unprepared speech which was facilitated by Cleopatra Tolla.
