Community of Driekop celebrate their heritage

Some people wore clothes that were not of their own culture because they wanted to show their children the importance of unity. "I am a Mopedi but I bought this Swazi outfit to wear because I love everyone in this country," said Malise Ngwato.

DRIEKOP – Traditional food and cultural dances were the order of the Heritage Day celebrations at Maroga Community Hall on Monday. The Pulana Maroga Trust organised the gathering to encourage people to remember their roots.

The celebrations were attended by locals who wanted to showcase their activities and attire of bygone days. These included, Venda, Sepedi, Xhosa, Swazi and Ndebele, and they all met in a spirit of unity through diversity.

The event saw cultural performances ranging from Makgakgasa, Kiba, Malopo as well as renditions of poems. Traditional herbs and medicines were also on display.

It was a wonderful day for villagers because they did not often get the chance to celebrate with their children through dance and song.

“This day gave children an opportunity to learn about their roots. We want them to carry on with the traditions when we have passed on,” Vulture Mohlala, the organiser said.

The event was complemented with delicious African foods like mogodu, morogo, mopani worms and traditional sorghum beer.
