Sadtu celebrates teachers during their day

OHRIGSTAD – Over a hundred teachers from the Mike Mashego branch of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) celebrated Teachers’ Day on October 17.
The event, which also included awards for retired educators, was held at Lamb Ale Restaurant in Ohrigstad.
Keynote speaker, Pitje Nkumpi said Sadtu believes that education is a public good because of the central role it plays in transforming society.
This year’s Teachers’ Day was celebrated under the theme: “The right to education means the right to a qualified teacher”.
This resonates with Sadtu’s long-standing call for increased investment in teacher training and development, which is captured in several congress declarations and resolutions.
“It is a driver of economic development, and promotes peace, tolerance and social cohesion. Teachers are therefore central to this, as they are the means through which education is transmitted. They therefore need to be highly qualified in order to ensure that education does indeed do what it is supposed to do: transform the lives of people for the better.”
Pupils from Maepa and Tshabelang Dinoko primary schools also took part in extramural activities at the event.
The ceremony concluded with seven retired teachers from the branch being handed awards and certificates.
