Learning life skills on outdoor adventures

Pupils from Summerhill Prep in Hazyview spent some time outside the classroom this past week. That does not mean, however, that they did not learn anything while on adventure camps in the outdoors.
“We believe in education outside the classroom,” explains headmaster, Cheryl Calmeyer. “During adventure camps we instill values like relationships, endurance, responsibility, bravery and more. Pupils are also rewarded for adopting these values in their lives.”
The grade one to three pupils went on a two-night adventure stay at Ekukhanyeni Youth Camp Facility. “By staying out two nights, these young pupils already showed some bravery, the value that was focused on during the outing,” Calmeyer says.
The grade fours to sevens enjoyed a three-night stay at Queens River Adventure Camp on the Badplaas Road. They participated in different activities, each of which also served to teach them more about the abovementioned values.
The fact that they were highly commended by the mentors and facilitators at both camps shows that they already adhere to these values, Calmeyer proudly commented.
