Community protests disrupting schooling in and around Ga Selepe

"It's uncalled for and it's a matter of concern for the department. Communities must separate issues and at all times education must be protected."

ATOK – Schools in the area are affected by the ongoing strike at Ga Selepe Village.

On Monday pupils could not write some of their papers due to the strike in the village. Schools were forced to shut down. Communities are demanding a 24-kilometre tarred road from Ga Selepe to Maandagshoek.

Sakkie Mokgoba, a community leader said they had been promised a road for the past two decades.

“This road has been promised to be on designed stage from April 2016 and up to date we have not heard any response from the department of public works or the premier, Stan Mathabatha himself. We went to see them and handed them a memorandum, but did not receive any answers other than they don’t have a budget for the road.

On Monday 14 schools were closed. Residents have vowed to remain on the streets until their demands are met. Public works department’s spokesman, Joshua Kwapa said the road is on their master plan and it will be attended to as soon as they get funds.

Meanwhile Limpopo education department’s Sam Makondo lambasted the communities for blocking roads.

“It’s uncalled for and it’s a matter of concern for the department. Communities must separate issues and at all times education must be protected.”
