Traffic in the Gorge severely delayed due to fatal accidents

Two fatal accidents in the Crocodile Gorge between Kaapmuiden and Karino earlier this morning have resulted in road closures and traffic is backed up for several kilometres.

KAAPMUIDEN – Four people were killed in two serious accidents on the N4 in the Crocodile Gorge earlier this morning.

According to Moeti Mmusi of the Department of Safety, Security and Liaison, a truck hit two people trying to change the tyre of their sedan in the early hours of the morning.

The driver died on the scene, while the passenger succumbed to serious injuries in hospital.

The westbound lanes were closed and a stop-and-go implemented to enable authorities to regulate traffic during the recovery and scene clean-up.

This resulted in severe traffic delays.

While authorities were still busy, another accident occurred around 09:30.

A truck collided with a bakkie head-on and two fatalities and a slight injury was reported.

By 10:00 traffic was backed up almost to Kaapmuiden and the tollgate.

Motorists are urged to delay their travel plans or use alternative routes where possible. Motorists that use the N4 are urged to be cautious as drivers have been seen making u-turns or exhibiting other reckless behaviour to try and escape the traffic jam.
