Illegal dumping extremely dangerous
FTLM spokesman Ngwato Rachidi said the Burgersfort Landfill Site reached its capacity in 2018 and is under decommissioning.
BURGERSFORT – Fetakgomo Tubatse Greater Municipality’s landfill site in town has been closed for almost a year, but this does not stop residents from illegally dumping.
Thick black smoke coming from the landfill fills the air in town. Not only is this an unpleasant sight, but it is also becoming a health risk.
Communities have continued to dispose of their solid waste over the past eight months.
Residents have complained of the stench as well as fires next to the municipality’s landfill site.
The site is filled to capacity and garbage is strewn at the entrances and the road leading to the site. Resident Malebo Malaka said, “We demand Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM) to clean up the area next to the site and to cease with their fires. An alternative dumping area must also be organised by the municipality. The area is also not safe. Our children might suffer from diseases.”

“FTLM has appointed an environmental consultant to source a waste management licence for a new waste disposal site. The process is under scoping of the required environmental impact assessment process.”
Rachidi added, “A public participation process was undertaken and scoping report has been prepared and submitted to the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism”.
He said alternatively all waste disposal activities were diverted to Malogeng landfill site in Atok.
