Gogos go for gold in soccer

BURGERSFORT – To kick away boredom in their lives and stay fit, gogos in Madiseng have adopted a new hobby – playing soccer.
The Ga Madiseng Old Age Club was formed in January this year and women from the age of 55 to 85 are welcome to join the club.
The team is coached by local club owner, Malan Moriri who is assisted by Juddy Motene. “They play soccer twice a week and on some days we let them exercise in order to keep fit. This helps them to fight off the effects of diabetes, arthritis and high blood pressure,” said Moriri.
The newspaper caught up with the group as they played a friendly match with local youth ladies. Although the match ended in a stalemate the gogos had been enthusiastic to participate.
The game lasted for only 30 minutes. “Surely we cannot allow them to play 90 minutes. This was just to let them get used to the rules of the game.
We are also arranging matches with other teams in the nearby future to let them compete.” Motene said the motive behind the formation of the team is to promote healthy living.
Aletta Riba, who plays as a left winger for the team, said, “I am now able to move my body without any pain and I hardly take any medication. I feel younger and I didn’t know that I had such super skills in soccer.” The team pleaded with locals for the donation of a soccer ball, soccer kits and a first aid kit.
