Innibos offers popular opera

For the first time a full-length opera will be performed as part of the festival.

La bohème, probably the most well-known and most performed opera of our times, will mesmerise audiences again during this year’s Innibos.

For the first time, this full-length opera by creative team Magdalene Minnaar and Jose Dias will be performed as part of the festival.

In the two leading roles are Glenn Seven Allen and Celeste Morales, both from New York. Allen is a stalwart of the New York scene and has sung the role of Rodolfo many times, while Morales, singing the role of Mimì, is a fresh face with an absolutely glorious voice.

The rest of the cast is sourced from Cape Town and Pretoria, and are all experienced vocalists in their own right. In the role of the jealous lover, Marcello, is Solly Motaung, and the apple of his eye, Musetta, is sung by Busi Ngejane. Rodolfo’s friends, Colline and Schaunard, are sung by Conroy Scott and Luvuyo Mbundu and the cast is rounded out by Pretoria-based Johan Scheepers who sings Alcindoro.

Our own Sempre Vino chorus will add a touch of colour to the second act café scene.

Stefan Benade, a fantastic designer from Cape Town, will do the lighting design, so not only will the performance be glorious to the ear, but also the eye.

Supertitles are provided so you will easily be able to follow the entire story in English. This production will be with piano accompaniment, with the talented Portuguese pianist, Jose Dias, conducting from behind the piano.

Tickets are R142 at Computicket and Innibos. Shows are 18:00 on Saturday June 29 and 12:00 Sunday June 30, both at the Civic theatre.
