Watch: Parts of Acornhoek police station burnt to a cinder

Sections of the Acornhoek Police Station were damaged after it caught fire yesterday.

ACORNHOEK – Brig Leonard Hlathi, the provincial police spokesman confirmed that the fire started at 22:20, causing extensive damage to the detective offices, as well as the community service centre.

The SAPS forensic department will conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

A comprehensive assessment of the damages will be done by experts as the charred building is unsafe for entry by officials, but it will not interrupt normal policing in the area.

The provincial commissioner of the police in Mpumalanga, Lt Gen Mondli Zuma, has ensured that a temporary community service centre will be established.

The police have also in the interim moved the trial-awaiting prisoners to other police stations for safety reasons, even though the holding cells were not affected by the fire.
