Calvinites excel in WSC competitions

In concluding the event, 50 pupils from participating schools who qualified for the global competition were announced.

BURGERSFORT – The World Scholar’s Cup debate tournament took place at Calvin College recently.The Burgersfort Round was a thrilling event, involving schools around Sekhukhune, such as the Batau and Mogolo High Schools, Mogale Wa Bagale Technical High School, St Mark’s College and the host, Calvin College.

The scholars had the opportunity to interact with guests from the USA who were running the show.

Pupils competed in different activities, including collaborative writing, the scholar’s bowl, the scholar’s challenge and debate.The Calvinites were marvellous, as they gathered an avalanche of trophies and medals on the day. They managed to produce winners in most of the activities.

Ayanda Malapane won the overall best student award in the senior division.

Ayanda Malapane, a grade 10 pupil at Calvin, was the big winner. She won the overall best student award in the senior division. Kelebogile Mashishi, from St Mark’s, took home the Asimov award.

Calvin College’s Lewis Rantho, Nathi Pako and Motlamogale Shai obtained first places in the global invitation division to Durban.Teams that won during the Burgersfort Round are going to compete in the Global Round in Durban on September 23 .Durban winners will find themselves taking part in the tournament of champions at Yale University in the United States of America.

St Mark’s College’s Kelebogile Mashishi took home the Asimov award.

Medals and trophies were handed to the participants. Thishin Moodley, who coordinated the activities, thanked the participants for taking part. “Those who had the opportunity to take part, but failed to do so, really lost out.”

Andrew Vandwani, debate teacher at Calvin, thanked the school management and teachers for their overwhelming support. He expressed optimism that the 2020 event will be bigger and better, since the tournament is going to be an annual event.
