Mashishing Promotional League

The Mashishing Promotional League (MPL), in association with Charbo Security, paid tribute to football players who excelled in sports at their annual sports awards function held at Mashishing's community hall recently.

According to MPL’s Jerry Fenyane, the awards were introduced in 2013 to acknowledge locals participating in sports in an effort to fight against crime and substance abuse among the youth of Thaba Chweu Local Municipality.

“The purpose of the event is to give recognition to all football players who worked hard throughout the season and to motivate other players to take sports seriously.”

Annah Nyathi, mother of Katlego Nyathi, who was awarded for the most improved football player, told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that she was so excited her son received an award. “I am so happy and hope this award will encourage him to focus more on his football career at this young age. I hope this will inspire him to avoid getting involved in substance abuse and other criminal activities that get teenagers in trouble often.”

Lesibe Nawa, South African Football Association Ehlanzeni referees coordinator for Thaba Chweu Local Football Association, commended the Mashishing Promotional League for holding this function. Nawa said such events will encourage football players to put more effort in sports. “We have a problem of drugs in Mashishing at school level. There is a certain primary school that I have visited where there are children in grade 7 selling dagga at school. Drugs and football do not mix,” he added.
