Organisation requests citrus trees to feed the city

The aim of this initiative is to provide fruit for homeless people, provide shade and beautify the city.

We Care 4 Nelspruit needs fruit trees to plant in the city. The organisation is asking for citrus trees, such as naartjies and oranges. The aim of this initiative is to provide fruit for homeless people, provide shade and beautify the city.

We Care 4 Nelspruit started this initiative in partnership with Nelspruit City Improvement, Kruger Lowveld Chamber of Business and Tourism, and the Mpumalanga Leadership Foundation.

Past TJ Maré, from the organisation, said the idea was conceived after they saw empty plant boxes in the city.

“We are conscious about the small trees. Ideally we do not want trees that are small. Previous trees were ‘taken without consent’. We would like to ask people to donate a bigger type of tree. Filling the empty plant boxes will serve the purpose of providing shade, beautifying the city and will eventually provide fruit for people who live in the city,” he said.

This is not the first time that the organisation has planted trees in the city.

“We got negative comments on how people would steal the trees. This organisation is a positive initiative in the city and we are happy to serve the city with Mbombela and other role players,” he said.

We Care 4 Nelspruit has embarked in various initiatives since it was started earlier this year. They have other projects running in the city to achieve the objective of a clean and beautiful CBD. Maré said We Care 4 Nelspruit was started after they saw how unclean the city was.

The Nelspruit City Improvement District, Nelspruit Community Forum and Kruger Lowveld Chamber of Business and Tourism and Mpumalanga Leadership Foundation decided that they wanted to make a difference.
