GALLERY: Grade 8s welcomed into Penryn family

The grade 8 tie ceremony took place on Monday in the Penryn Chapel. Each learner's "matric buddy" welcomed them by placing a Penryn tie around their neck and lighting a candle.

Due to Covid-19 regulations, only the matrics, grade 8s and teachers were allowed in the chapel, unlike earlier years when the whole school and parents were in attendance.

Piers Cruickshanks, the college deputy head, said in his speech, “Your grade 8 year has begun very differently from what you or any of us could have anticipated. You spent one day on campus on January 18 during which you met your scholar exec. You also learned about the Penryn Honour Code: to honour God, honour others, honour yourself, honour the college and honour the environment.

“And then school started – but not as it usually does. You had to start with remote learning, no face-to-face contact with your teachers or friends. But it is part of your story – no group before you or any other grade 8 group after you will have this story to tell. You, the grade 8s of 2021, have shown One and All that you can adapt and that you have tenacity. And with those attributes, you will succeed.

“You have been welded into one grade through your adapted two-day orientation programme. You have shown your willingness to participate in our Phys Ed and sport programmes. We are looking forward to watching you representing Penryn on the sports field, on stage and in the classroom.

“You grade 8s, who will be the Class of 2025, are ready to become fully fledged Penryn scholars. The tie is symbolic of this moment. Until now you have not been allowed to wear the Penryn tie. From today, for the rest of your school career at Penryn, you will represent this school wherever and whenever you wear our tie. You should wear it with pride as it is symbolic of the success of this school and the generations of scholars that have gone before you.”
