223 boxes of illicit cigarettes seized in Mecklenburg

The Limpopo SAPS continues to fight crime all over the province. The SAPS arrested a 33-year-old suspect at Tafelkop for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The suspect was arrested by the members of the Sekhukhune Flying Squad, the Limpopo Highway Patrol and National Crime Prevention teams, during an operation conducted on March 12 at around 21:00 in the Motetema policing area.

  The suspect was found in possession of an assault rifle (R1), four live rounds and a 9mm magazine with 26 rounds of ammunition. In another incident, the members of the Limpopo Highway Patrol recovered 223 abandoned boxes and 25 cartons of illicit cigarettes worth R250 000 inside two minibuses at Ga-Phasha outside Mecklenburg.

The vehicles were also seized. During the past week, the SAPS confiscated a total of 1 865 sticks of counterfeit cigarettes, 52 dangerous weapons, 133 grams of dagga, 21 dagga plants, 16 grams of crystal meth, 5 000 grams of Nyaope, 159 knives and seven stolen vehicles. The acting commissioner of the police, Maj Gen Jan Scheepers has commended the members for the impressive job that they continue to do on a daily basis, to maintain a safe and secure environment for the citizens of this province.
