Moroke’s Lesedi-sedi honours grandparents
Learners perform traditional dances and share inspirational stories to celebrate the vital role grandparents play in their daily lives.
More than 50 elderly residents were honoured by the management of Lesedi-sedi Educare Centre in Moroke on September 24.

For the past five years, this school has been honouring pensioners. The event also served to mark Heritage Month. Donning their traditional regalia, the gogos and mkhulus danced to music of bygone days.
Traditional cuisine was served at the event, while learners performed cultural dances such as kiba and makgakgasa.
Grandparents play vital role in child-rearing
PEL Moloto, founder and executive head of Lesedi-sedi Educare Centre, said grandparents play a crucial role in the lives of learners.

“Grandparents, whether paternal or maternal, are equally cherished and loved due to the critical roles they play in their grandchildren’s lives.
“Lesedi-sedi is glad to have Grandparents’ Day on our school calendar. After several school-parent interactions and narratives from learners, we realised that many learners are looked after by their grandparents.
“We appreciate that grandparents from our school community invest significant physical and emotional energy into caring for their grandchildren on a regular basis. Their care is embedded in a strong familial relationship, which in turn is being strengthened through regular involvement and engagement with grandchildren,” added Moloto.

Some learners narrated their grandparents’ traditional, rich life experiences that motivate them to work hard in school, develop pro-social behaviour and appreciate the dynamic changes in their lives.
Elders receive gifts and words of encouragement
Among the panel of motivational speakers and pastors was Germinah Masemene. “When the elders speak, everyone listens. Today we are here to honour you,” she said.

The event concluded with management handing gifts to the elders.
