Westend celebrates 25 years of family legacy
Westend Shopping Centre commemorated its 25th anniversary on October 15, celebrating a legacy built on strong family values and community-driven support.

The evening’s forest theme was inspired by late founder Hans Geldenhuys, who had a background in forestry. Distinguished guests were welcomed by the master of ceremonies, Marita Kroon, who highlighted the shopping centre’s success over the years and thanked loyal tenants for their support.
To mark this 25-year milestone, the centre decided to give back a total of R200 000.

These contributions included donations of R10 000 each to non-profit organisations such as Prolife Pet Rescue, SPCA Nelspruit, Progratia Learning Centre, and the Nelspruit Care Buddies, as well as R25 000 to a lucky shopper.

The evening featured canapés and drinks, as well as live entertainment from well-known Afrikaans singers Jo Black and Refentse. One thing that was evident that evening was the special bond within the Geldenhuys family. Like a tree in the forest, the family’s legacy has deep roots, providing a strong foundation for the popular shopping centre.

A special video honoured Hans and his wife, Pietie. Before developing the centre, Hans worked in the sawmill industry in Klaserie, where he processed pine. He later moved to Mbombela and completed the groundwork for the centre himself. In April 2001, the centre officially opened with 25 shops.

Today, Westend offers even greater convenience, with 32 tenants catering to shoppers’ everyday needs, as well as ATMs for two banks
