Head-on collision kills one, disrupts traffic in Mbombela

It is alleged a BMW’s driver was speeding and lost control of his vehicle.

A high-speed head-on collision between Church Unlimited and the TUT intersection on the R40 claimed the life of one person and seriously injured another this morning, February 19.

Emer-G-Med was called out for a serious motor vehicle accident at 06:00.

It is understood the driver of a BMW travelling at high speed from Barberton towards Mbombela lost control of the vehicle and collided head-on with a Nissan Navara double cab bakkie.

The BMW’s driver was declared dead on the scene, while the Navara’s driver sustained some serious injuries. Emer-G-Med’s advanced life support team transported him to Nelspruit Mediclinic for further care.

At the time of writing, the R40 in Barberton’s direction was closed awaiting the SAPS and forensic photographers. Consequently, a stop-and-go was put in place in the Mbombela bound lane.

“We urge people to please adhere to the speed limit, slow down and be vigilant in this area,” said Emer-G-Med’s Martin Jeffrey.
