Man linked to White River shooting appears in court

After handing himself over, the suspect in the White River shooting appeared in court under tight security.

A man linked to a shooting that left one person dead and another critically injured near the White River Rugby Club earlier this month, appeared in the White River Magistrate’s Court this morning, June 18.

Marco Schalekamp (42) surrendered on June 17 and faces charges of murder and attempted murder in connection with the incident on June 5, in which Pieter Burger died and Arno van Niekerk was injured.

Schalekamp appeared in court this morning under heightened security.

The case was postponed to June 25 amid concerns over his flight risk status and unresolved questions surrounding his background.
