Five killed in 24 hours in Hazyview and Calcutta

Police are investigating multiple shootings in the Hazyview and Calcutta areas after five people were killed in three separate incidents over 24 hours.

Three people were shot and killed today, December 31, bringing the total number of gun-related murders in the Hazyview and Calcutta policing areas to five within 24 hours.

In the latest incidents, it is alleged that two men were shot dead at Oakley near Mkhuhlu this morning at about 09:00. Later, another man was killed at nearby Madras Trust.

The shootings today follow the killings of two brothers near Nyongane Trust outside Hazyview yesterday afternoon, December 30.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Jabu Ndubane said she was still gathering details about the murders at the time of publication.

“I am interacting with my counterparts at Hazyview and Calcutta SAPS for detailed reports on the killings,” she said.

She urged members of the community with information that might assist police in the investigations to come forward via the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or the My SAPS app.

Ndubane could not comment on whether the murders are related, saying investigations will reveal more. The names and ages of the deceased are also not yet available.
