Young chefs cook up a storm

Each contestant had to impress judges with their ability to improvise after receiving their surprise instruction: Baking pizza.

MBOMBELA – Young chefs had their cake and ate it too when they competed in the third annual Junior SPAR Chef Competition at the Mpumalanga Regional Training Trust (MRTT) Hospitality and Tourism Academy on July 10.

Each contestant had to impress judges with their ability to improvise after receiving their surprise instruction: Baking pizza.

Sophie Schafer was crowned the culinary queen and walked away with a R5 000 shopping voucher from Riverside Mall. Zoey Davids came in second place with R2 000 and Wenzile Mncina in third with a R1 000 shopping voucher.

GT Lundie of Zest@Kavinga was the day’s master of ceremonies, as well as a member of the judging panel of which Lee-Anne Harrison and Bongani Khoza of MRTT and aspirant chef, Tenica Laubscher, formed part. According to Nikki Laubscher, SPAR’s events and sponsorship coordinator in the Lowveld, the aim of the competition was to “inspire budding young chefs and to develop a love of cooking among our youth”. Each contestant also received a hamper with SPAR Good Living baking and cooking utensils.
