Public gains insight into police work
Community members of Welgelegen Farm were visited by police and other state departments to raise awareness about rural policing.
KOMATIPOORT – In a bid to combat petty and serious crime, the local police station in conjunction with the provincial department of community safety, security and liaison, held a rural policing awareness campaign at Welgelegen Farm on April 23.
Home affairs, the Tonga Police Cluster, Masisukumeni Woman and Children in Crisis, Komatipoort SAPS youth desk forum, the local Community Policing forum (CPF), Bukhosi and Old Mutual were also part of the campaign.
The organisations and departments aimed to plough their expertise and time back into rural communities and local station spokesman, Const Natacia Mbuyane, said the campaign was very productive.
“The locals who attended the event were given the chance to interact and pose questions to representatives. Lt Col Queeneth Mbuyane, the Tonga Cluster Vispol coordinator, also introduced the new acting Komatipoort station commander, Lt Col Willie Meiring, to the community of Welgelegen Farm (KaMehlwane).”
One of the community members from the area said they were glad they had attended the event because they had gained some knowledge as to why people were arrested during protests and other crimes.
“Sometimes we tend to go with the flow, and that normally results in us ending up behind bars. But today light has been shared on how the law operates,” Mr Vincent Ngwenya remarked.
