What you need to know about Google Duo
Meet the brand-new, simple one-on-one video calling app for everyone. Click here for a quick guide on how to use it.

Google’s brand-new video calling app, Duo, was launched last Tuesday. However, it only became available for download in SA late last week.
The app aims to simplify video calling and bring people together wherever they are. It really is quite simple, even a toddler could use it. But, just in case you’re feeling a little lost, here’s what you need to know.
Getting started
The app is available on all Android and iOS devices and works off your phone number and connects to the contacts on your device. According to Google, Duo has been optimised to connect faster than other video apps and to ensure it stays in sync.
As usual, you first need to agree to the Ts and Cs and click “allow” about five more times. Other than that, getting started is easy as pie. Just follow the prompts.
Making and receiving calls
Calls are made with a single tap. Thanks to the Knock Knock feature, you can see live video of the caller before answering. According to Google, this makes video calling more spontaneous, welcoming, and helps you connect before you even pick up.
To make a call, you simply click on “Video call” to view your contacts available on Google Duo, and to answer, you simply swipe the icon upwards.
FYI
• The app can work on weaker than usual data connections and easily transition from WiFi to cellular data.
• When bandwidth is limited, the app will simply reduce the resolution to keep the call going smoothly.
• Google has focused on privacy and all calls are encrypted.
• Your microphone can be muted during calls – see second icon on the bottom left of the screen.
• To switch cameras from front to back during calls, tap the camera button above the mute one.
• Within two days of its initial release, Duo quickly climbed to the number one free app on Google Play.
• On Monday it had 38 919 five-star ratings on Play Store.
According to the results of a poll by Android Police on the public’s reaction to Google Duo on Monday, 31% said they were using the app and loved it, 18% said they have not tried it yet but plan to, and 16% said they were using it but only thought it was okay.
