Bergvlam production stuns

Hoërskool Bergvlam brought a production, Step Out: Street Vs Stage, to the Civic Centre Theatre last week.

The storyline, however heavily based on all the dance films made over the past 20 years, was tweaked with South African roots. Set in Manenberg, Cape Town, the story of rival dance crews are told.

After breaking a window with his friends, Matt Gage (Banele Mthembu) ends up doing community service at the Manenberg Art School. He then meets Diedré le Grange (Gabriella Mansfield), the ballerina of the school and decides to be her partner for her big showcase.

His relationship with his friends and former dance crew deteriorates because of his new partnership, and they ruin Diedré’s chance at her performance.

After going up against each other in a dance battle, they lose a friend, Skinny (Johan Pauw), when he is gunned down by police. They then realise what is really important. The old and the new group merge and they enter the Vortex dancing competition, where they ultimately win R300 000 for the newly established “Skinny Foundation.”

The production not only had impressive effects, but truly talented singers and dancers. Timothy Baloyi sang a beautiful rendition of To Build a Home. All the singers had prerecorded songs made for the show.

“I have seldom seen a teenager without any formal training put so much effort into a production. We salute you, Banele Mthembu!” said Mrs Annemarié Kleynhans, principal of the school.
