Self-defence classes for the vulnerable are a definite must

A few residents of Marloth Park recently learnt how to properly defend themselves against possible attackers.

MARLOTH PARK – A few locals learned to fight back against possible attackers during recent self-defence classes at Marlothi Shopping Centre.

The centre’s owners wanted to empower residents following the attacks on single women over the past year and came across martial artists Bridgid Whitehead and Lucas Johnson.

Whitehead, a Johannesburger, has several years’ experience in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a grappling martial art that specialises in being highly effective for a smaller person in dismantling and disrupting an attack from a large-sized person.

Lucas is an American with experience in jiu-jitsu. He boxed at an amateur level for three years and has been a practitioner of Krav Maga, an Israel Defence Army Martial art extreme defence and offence tactics for four years.

Instructors Lucas Johnson and Bridgid Whitehead demonstrate an attack scenario.

Their goal is to arm women, children and those who cannot defend themselves with the techniques and tactics to ward off or evade an attacker who prey on the weak.

Residents gathered at the Tin Shack over four days to master self-defence techniques and had fun while learning.

Being aware is one of the most important aspects of self-defence. Don’t ignore your instincts – if something feels akward, leave the area or situation.

Before you just start fighting, ensure you learn to recognise potential dangerous situations you can rather avoid or flee from.

Don’t let strangers get too close to you, especially if they make you uncomfortable. Don’t just accept offers of help.

If it feels strange, leave for a more crowded area fast or call for help.

Never leave an opened drink unattended when at a restaurant or bar, as criminals tend to use that opportunity to slip a drug into the glass. Never let a stranger into your house.

Call the police, local law enforcement or emergency services before putting yourself in danger.

If you do need to fight back, focus on soft spots like the feet, groin, stomach and eyes.

The two martial artists hope to host another course in Marloth Park in future. Everyone interested in joining such classes can contact Sheena on 062-090-5365 or Jeanette on 074-777-7716.
