Speaker creates a legacy through improving education
The Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature's Speaker, Thandi Shongwe donated desks and chairs to three schools in Nkomazi yesterday.
SCHOEMANSDAL – While many schoolchildren take chairs and desks for granted, many rural children have to do without. This is why learners and teachers of Lugebhuta Secondary, Bukhosibetfu and Shongwe Boarding School were so happy and excited when they received desks, chairs and dignity packs yesterday.

It was part of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature Speaker, Thandi Shongwe’s legacy projects.
She was accompanied by a member of the national assembly, Ms Duduzile Manana, Nkomazi mayor Cllr Thulisile Khoza, members of the mayoral committee, councillors and senior education officials from the circuit.
Besides helping to create a conducive learning environmental for learners, the Speaker also aimed at motivating members of the provincial legislature to adopt a school within their individual constituencies.

During the handover, Shongwe encouraged learners to respect the infrastructure that government has built for them to acquire better and quality education. She also shared her own schooling experience, where learners had to study under extremely difficult conditions.
Walkers were donated to two disabled learners and a wheelchair to Bukhosibetfu, which caters for disabled learners.

The speaker also made a commitment to continuously supply learners with dignity packs as part of her legacy projects.
Shongwe specially addressed learners with Albinism. “We recently hosted a Parliament for people with Albinism and they shared their challenges and special needs with us as the legislature. Ensure that they are always protected and treat them as your brothers and sisters, don’t call them names because they are human beings just like all of us”. She encouraged leaners with Albinism to wear hats and sunglasses while on the school premises.
Shongwe concluded her speech by appealing to other stakeholders to help create conducive learning conditions at schools.
