Children’s home gets trees, library and computer centre
"We are proud to help a community such as this and feel privileged to be involved," said Nomads Club captain, Mr Brian Springorum.
MALALANE – “It is important that we do not just provide a shelter for these kids, but also give them an education,” said Mr Derek van Niekerk, director of sugar at RCL Foods. He was speaking at the opening of a library donated by the Nomads Golf Club to the Amazing Grace Children’s Home.
The centre is home to more than 20 children from disadvantaged and often abusive homes.
Many of them cannot attend school in this country, as their parents are Mozambican nationals without the necessary paperwork to allow their children to get an education. The golf club raised R125 000 for the home, which went to contributing to the library, a computer centre and new kitchen equipment which were welcomed by the staff at the children’s home and RCL Foods.
“We are proud to help a community such as this and feel privileged to be involved,” said Nomads Club captain, Mr Brian Springorum.
The education department, represented by Mr Mfana Shekwa, Malalane Circuit manager, was present to witness the day and hear the home’s plight. “We understand the bigger problem, but these children need to go to school,” said Van Niekerk.
The day formed part of the home’s Mandela Day celebration, where RCL Foods prepared lunch for the children. Springorum, along with the RCL Foods team, planted trees and seedlings on the home’s premises.
