Groovy, baby! Jock goes back to the ’80s

Dj's played timeless anthems from the '80s, '90s and now.

MBOMBELA – Groovy, baby. This is the only phrase that comes close to describing Saturday night’s Ales and Anthems party at Jock Pub and Grill. It was everything one expects from a Saturday at the Jock – and a whole lot more.

By 18:00 the Super Rugby match between the Sharks and the Lions was in full swing. After the Lions won 27 – 10 something very cool happened.

Three guys – locals you have seen somewhere at some point – stepped onto the DJ podium. They were estate agent, Greg Bisaro, sales and marketing representative at Applied Gas Stephen Andrews, and James Gibb, whose day job is with the provincial government.
They were dressed in white tops adorned with the words “Ales and Anthems” – the group’s name. Bisaro explained that it was the trio’s third appearance. After having made their debut in February, they were hungry for more. They teamed up with Jock Old School Parties and played timeless anthems from the ’80s, ’90s and now.

Patrons aired their requests and partied the night away to all-time favourites while enjoying pizza and beer on special. It was hard to determine who was having the most fun – the lively DJs or the crowd. The playlist brought out the inner rock star of many a partygoer.

The Bangles’ “Walk like a Egyptian” and “99 Red Balloons” from Nena were some of the first tunes that set the tone. “Wild Boys” by Duran Duran had many singing along. Ettienne Hefer, an avid Duran Duran fan, could barely contain himself and danced along to his favourite tune.

When Bon Jovi’s “Living on a Prayer” came on, patrons flocked to the dance floor. ACDC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” was another one for the books, as was Midmight Oil’s “Beds are Burning”.

The fun lasted late into the night. Patrons expressed their delight at hearing old favourites again. According to Christa le Roux, she enjoyed it immensely. Conrad Boullé, Jeff Sullivan, Doug Driver and Paul Ryan echoed her sentiments. Judging by locals’ positive reaction, Ales and Anthems are expected to appear on a DJ podium again soon.
