Makhonjwa provides Germans a wealth of information on their annual visit
The German geology group from Jena University, led by Prof Christoph Heubeck, has again made Barberton its base camp for its annual field campaign.
BARBERTON – Heubeck has been joined by two MSc students, Andreas Zametzer and Sebastian Reimann, who are visiting South Africa and the Makhonjwa Mountains for the first time.
Each student has been instructed to produce a geological map and describe rock units in their respective areas, in the central Makhonjwa Mountains.

Heubeck said this was in order for them to discover more details about the early history of our planet and the development of early life recorded in the ancient rock strata.
The bakkie they are using is again sponsored by Duwies Duvenage from Barberton NTT Toyota.
“We love the wide open spaces and the great views,” said Zametzer.

Reimann agreed. “In Germany, many geologists would love to study such interesting rocks as the Makhonjwa Mountains offer.”
The field campaign will conclude in mid August.
