SAPS Clerk found guilty of fraud
"It could have resulted in a loss of R28 750," said Sekgotodi.
MBOMBELA – An administrative clerk employed by the South African Police Service was found guilty of fraud and attempted theft in the Nelspruit Regional Court on Tuesday.
Lwazi Mkhabela (34) is a clerk at the police’s provincial offices at 3 Ferreira Street in Mbombela. She colluded with a fake company called Hanjanya Trading CC. Mkhabela had filed false documentation, according to which Hanjanya performed services for the police at its state garage in Standerton. She arranged that the company be paid accordingly.
“However, it transpired that the services were never rendered and that the transaction had been a fraudulent one,” said Hawks spokesman, Capt Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi. The transactions were stopped and the fraud and attempted theft investigated.
“It could have resulted in a loss of R28 750,” said Sekgotodi. She added that the police also launched an internal investigation into Mkhabela’s conduct. At the time of going to press, it was not yet clear whether she would be dismissed.
