Parents praying for Mienke

Baby Mienke's parents are still hopeful that their little girl will get better after a week in hospital after chocking on her bottle last

MBOMBELA – “We serve a mighty God,” said baby Mienke’s dad, Ryno Mulder.

He and his wife, Verna, are by their little girl’s side at Netcare Waterfall City Hospital in Midrand, Johannesburg.
The seven-month-old recently choked on her bottle while in the care of her day mother last Friday.

She was rushed to Mediclinic Nelspruit after she fell unconscious and stopped breathing.

She was resuscitated at the hospital before being airlifted to Midrand.

Her family have since reached out to the community through the Please Pray for Mienke Facebook page, asking them to pray for their daughter.
Ryno says she opened her eyes on Wednesday morning, giving them hope and a reason to stay positive.
“She is not yet conscious of all that is happening around her because she has been heavily medicated, but she seems to notice that we are there,” he said.

By Wednesday more than 3 000 people had pledged their support to the infant and family through their well wishes on the group.
Some came from as far away as Germany.

“We are still going through a rollercoaster of emotions and everyone’s support has been helpful,” he said.
Baby Mienke is the youngest of three children with two older sisters, Leané (4) and Zamoné (18 months).

According to Ryno, everyone is being positive, hoping for the best.
“No parent should go through this, I would not wish this on anyone,” he concluded.
