Schoolchildren’s dignity restored

In honouring the women of 1956, South African Forestry Companies Limited (Safcol) visited several schools in Mpumalanga and Limpopo to donate sanitary towels to 1 571 learners.

According to Nokuthula Makaringe, Safcol communication brand and events officer, the campaign was officially launched in 2013, with the first successful drop-off being made to 300 girls.

“Menstruation is not a choice, which makes sanitary towels a necessity. In the midst of the celebrations, 1 728 boys also received toiletries,” said Makaringe. Last August Safcol visited Vriesland Primary School in Mantjolo Village, near Badplaas.

“In this very small school, 17 girls and 21 boys received dignity packs. The schools visited are located in impoverished communities where the company operates. These dignity packs included sanitary towels, face cloths, toothpaste, toothbrushes, bath soaps, roll-on and body lotion. A total of 186 boys was also given toiletries,” said Makaringe.
