Donated trees to bear fruit for years to come

During Arbor Week, several schools around Nkomazi were gifted trees as part of projects by Malalane Toyota and Penreach respectively.

MALALANE – In an effort to help schools become more green and aid in environmental awareness, Malalane Toyota and Penreach respectively donated and planted trees during Arbor Week celebrations.

At Joseph Matsebula Secondary School in Driekoppies, Malalane Toyota service department foreman Ricky Calitz and colleague Dryke Breytenbach got their hands dirty in assisting the school to plant the trees.

The school does not have a lot of water, so mothers who sell items at the school empty the buckets of water they use on the trees when they’re done with their day’s work.

The grade tens and their teachers assisted in planting the indigenous buffalo thorn, Natal mahogany, Cape ash and bushwillow.

Calitz and Dryke also visited Luvolwethu Primary School in KaMhlushwa. The grade seven pupils were dressed in civvies to raise funds and in celebration of Arbor Day.

Four trees were also planted with the help of the grade sevens, their teachers and principal.

Malalane Toyota also donated trees to Suikerland Secondary School in Malalane. The grade 11C class and two teachers helped to plant Natal mahoganies, bushwillows and buffalo thorns.

This annual initiative is part of Malalane Toyota’s efforts to give back to the community and to aid in environmental conservation.

To raise awareness of environmental and sustainable development, pupils from Penryn College’s Environmental Committee and Halls donated and planted 17 fruit and indigenous trees to Ekhuphumuleni Primary School in Schoemansdal.

Dumilsile Zitha of Halls, Mikayla Nortjie, Mres Zinhle Sibiya of Ekhuphumuleni Primary School, (back) Samuel Khoza of Penreach, Shannon De Araujo, Keaton Rea and Pippa Spies and Michael Jordan of Halls.

The trees will eventually provide shade at the early childhood development centre on the school’s property  and support the school’s feeding scheme by providing fruit.

Michael Jordan, Halls’ Chief Financial Official provided teachers with instructions on how to ensure the sustainable maintenance of the trees.
