Officials celebrate Nkomazi’s diverse cultures

Traditional food, dress and entertainment helped to encourage Nkomazi Local Municipality employees to be proud of their heritage and customs.

SCHOEMANSDAL – With exuberant singing and dancing and dressed in traditional outfits, councillors and other Nkomazi Local Municipality employees entered the community hall on September 22.

The departments of community services and arts and culture hosted a event in celebration of Heritage Day.

Each department wore a different culture’s traditional dress and had a chance to sing and dance.

Sitting in groups, the guests enjoyed traditional beer and food, as a local cultural group provided the first entertainment of the day.

After everyone was welcomed, Cllr Sophy Dlamini-Zitha explained that the celebration aimed to revive African customs and traditions and promote pride in culture.

Snethemba Maphanga, a learner of Komatipoort Akademie, also had the opportunity to perform. She will represent the Swati culture during the Indoni Miss Cultural SA in Durban on October 7 and guests were encouraged to vote for her.

Nkomazi residents who would like to help her win, can SMS “Indoni SWATI” to 48496 at R1,50 per SMS.

The various departments also helped keep the spirits high with their enthusiastic performances. Prizes were awarded to those who best represented their chosen culture.
