Man sentenced to 22 years in jail for breaking in, raping minor

A 39-year-old man was sentenced to 22 years' imprisonment yesterday after he was found guilty of raping a minor in Jeppes Reef in 2015.

JEPPES REEF – The 39-year-old Dumisani Samuel Manana was sentenced to spend 22 years behind bars in the Nkomazi Regional Court after magistrate Edgar Moletsane found him guilty of raping a minor.

According to evidence brought to the court, Manana broke into the bedroom of an 11-year-old girl in Jeppes Reef around 23:30 on February 15, 2015.

The girl did not know the perpetrator but was able to identify him for authorities when she saw him on the street after the incident. She recognised the scar on his face.

Prosecutor, Ronnie Manzini and investigating officer Det Sgt Baster Mbambo were praised for their work to ensure the success of the case.

Schoemansdal SAPS station commander Col John Madonsela welcomed the sentence, as he believes it will send a harsh message to perpetrators.

Parents, families and teachers are urged to take allegations of rape seriously and immediately report it. Police urge them to cooperate so they can gather as much evidence as possible to ensure that rapists are put behind bars and not to interfere in investigations to protect family members who are guilty of such acts.
