Mountain racers make way for hippos

Runners and mountain bikers were greeted by a beautiful, cloudless day.

The Vodacom Hippo Hollow Challenge race lived up to its name on June 1 as the organisers, Sunshine Events, had to re-route the race to accommodate a wandering hippo and her baby.

Runners and mountain bikers were greeted by a beautiful, cloudless day.

Nico Bell, the defending champion of 2018, won the 60 kilometre MTB race. Bernice van Wyk represented the women with a well-deserved first place.

Nico and Bernice both took home the King of the Mountain trophies, sponsored by Engen.

Alicia Coetser and Christey Harris had a great day out, running the trail, and recommend it to all budding mountain goats out there. With so much natural beauty in the Lowveld, trail running is really taking off.

Elephant Whispers hosted the event and had also cut, cleared and built the stunning trails.

Food and music provided a fitting end to the day’s adventures.

“I saw many people band together today, helping one another over obstacles and up the hills,” said André Visagie of Hippo Hollow. He expressed the hope to see everybody, and more participants, back for the race next year.
