Alex does his school proud

Alex, however, persevered and learned the art of stretching the bow with his mouth when shooting the arrow.

Alex Shaw, a resident of Hazyview and pupil at Accelerated Academy near White River, recently represented Mpumalanga when he competed in the national archery competition of the Southern African Christian School’s Sports Association in Ermelo.

Alex achieved an eighth position in the u/19 age group. There was a field of 18 other competitors.

Jarrod Clur, principal and administrator of Accelerated Academy, said they are extremely proud of him.

Alex is a hemiplegic and was recently featured in the sports section of Hazyview Herald.

He had a stroke before birth and consequently the motor part of his brain has not developed normally. His right hand is spastic and his legs are also affected.

As a result, he only started walking on his own at the age of eight and cannot handle the bow with his right hand when practising his favourite sport, archery.

Alex, however, persevered and learned the art of stretching the bow with his mouth when shooting the arrow.

He also sits on a chair when shooting, but that does not keep him from dreaming to reach the National Archery in the Schools Programme’s team soon.
