Two local teams from Hazyview participated in the annual Magnum car and bike rally from August 14 to 17.

Organised by the Pretoria Old Motor Club, the rally was hosted at Hotel Numbi and Garden Suites by Willem and Edna Fick.

Ferdie and Willem Lourens from Hazyview (in a 1984 Datsun) as well as the Ficks (in an Alfa Romeo) participated with others from far beyond the Lowveld and Mpumalanga to experience the scenery and enjoy some of the most beautiful mountain passes in the country.

The rally is, however, more than just a rally. It is more about sharing in the atmosphere of friendship, fun, good food and accommodation, organiser Leo Middelberg said.

Vehicles manufactured before December 31, 1997 were eligible. Their owners took great care to negotiate the roads with these classic models.

Gary Edwards from White River also participated on a 1980 model Suzuki GS1000 S, one of about 50 bikes owned by him. Another Lowvelder, Freddie Viljoen from Mbombela, joined on a 1975 BMW.

On the first day of the rally, participants covered about 300 kilometres and also visited Herman Nel’s private a collection of classic, vintage and old cars at Old Car Haven Museum on the Brondal Road.

On the second day another 300 kilometres were covered and on the final day, Saturday, they did about 200.

The excitement concluded with a prize giving at Hotel Numbi and Garden Suites on Saturday night.
