Mghubo Combined determined to excel

The minister of the Department of Education, Angie Motshekga, announced the reopening of schools for grades R,7, 8, 11 and 12 pupils recently.

TONGA – The department provided PPE which included sanitisers and masks, fumigated the schools’ toilets and assured the availability of water.

According to Mgubho Combined School’s principal, Sicelo Baldwin Mkhabela, every morning learners are taught to practise social distancing. Their temperatures are scanned at the gate and recorded.

“We show them where they can wash their hands, teach them not to borrow each other’s stationery and they eat separately during break time,” said Mkhabela.

He said since they have different grades in the schoolyard, they have different break times to avoid congestion. Twenty learners are accommodated in each classroom.

Grade 12 pupils start their classes at 07:00, grade 11s at 07:30 and grade 6s and 7s at 07:45. Break time for grade 12s is 11:00, for grade 11s is 10:00 and for grade 6s and
7s is 09:15.

Mgubho Combined obtained a 100 per cent matric pass rate in 2018 and 2019. “We’ve got our own spice here. We had morning, afternoon and weekend classes from January until March when the virus was announced.

Our learners will write final exams and pass. We are still aiming for 100 per cent pass rate, with powerful dedication.”

Grade R classes have not resumed at Mgubho Combined School since there is a lack of furniture and proper toilets for these pupils, and it was decided that they must stay home.
