The Sunbirds remain undefeated in Telkom Netball League
The Mpumalanga Sunbirds are still flying high after the second weekend of the competition in Pretoria. Their next fixture is on June 9 against the Limpopo Baobabs.
The Mpumalanga Sunbirds have managed to get through the second weekend of the Telkom Netball League unscathed, after trouncing the Northern Cape Diamonds at the Heartfelt Arena in Pretoria on Saturday morning.
“The game was brutal,” Thembisile Mdluli, the team’s head coach, said in her post-match remarks, but added that all the players had shown commitment on the court, and that they were hungry to get the win. They beat the Diamonds 49-26.

Besides the win, the Sunbirds also boast another victory, which is surely worth a mention. The co-captain, Palesa Mbukwana, received yet another player of the match accolade, rewarding her stellar defensive skills, shutting down the Diamonds’ shooting circle on numerous occasions. Mbukwana has been the leading player of the match recipient in the Telkom Netball League from 2015 to 2023.
She has received 16 best player mentions in total, and received two from four matches played in this year’s campaign.

The Sunbirds currently occupy the third log position in division 2, just one point below the Limpopo Baobabs. Although the Mpumalanga outfit have yet to loose a game in comparison to the Baobab’s one loss, the latter is second on the log based on other determining factors, including goal average and goal difference.
The league will resume on June 9 for round 3, when the Sunbirds will be in action in the first match of the weekend against the Baobabs at 13:00.
