Limpopo ANC to deploy new mayor at the SDM
Bahula will be the third Sekhukhune mayor in less than a year, succeeding Maleke Mokganyetji and Julia Mathebe.
The Limpopo ANC’s provincial executive committee (PEC) has axed Sekhukhune District Municipality’s (SDM) interim executive mayor, Cllr Maleke Mokganyetji.
She held the position for less than a year. She was inaugurated in December 2022. Four other mayors were sacked by the ruling party in Limpopo on November 6.
According to the party, Mokganyetji will be replaced by current Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality mayor, Minah Bahula, who is the current deputy chairperson of the ANC Sekhukhune region.
The ANC Limpopo’s provincial secretary, Reuben Madadzhe, said the decision to withdraw the mayors was inevitable as the municipalities were under temporary leadership while the party was resolving disputes.
“The PEC meeting received a report on the long outstanding matter of the mayorships of the Vhembe District Municipality as well as Makhado Local Municipality, which have been outstanding since the last local government elections of 2021,” said Madadzhe.
“We also received a report on the finalisation of the mayorships of SDM, as well as that of Collins Chabane, following the resignation of the executive mayor of SDM, Julia Mathebe, back in November 2022, as well as the unfortunate passing of the mayor of Collins Chabane,” he said.
Madadzhe said Bahula is the SDM mayoral candidate, while Freddah Nkondo, the speaker of the Vhembe District Municipality, will take over as the mayor of the municipality.
Dorcus Mboyi was also moved from being speaker in Makhado Local Municipality to the mayorship position.
Shadrack Maluleke will take over the role of executive mayor of Collins Chabane.
The deployment of the new mayors is expected to happen by the end of this week, once respective councils officially make the appointments and the current mayors resign.
