Mpumalanga Hawks call for public’s assistance in CIT robbery

The Hawks are looking for one of the suspects who robbed a cash-in-transit van in May and made away with an undisclosed amount of cash and a cellphone belonging to one of the security guards.

The Mpumalanga Hawks are requesting the public’s assistance to locate the suspect in this photograph they were able to obtain. The man is sought in connection with a CIT robbery that took place in New Forest in Bushbuckridge.

The provincial Hawks’ spokesperson, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, said that at 12:25 on May 17, an armoured G4S vehicle was travelling on the D4394 in New Forest. “The armoured vehicle was ambushed just past the Eagle Petrol Station. A white Audi sedan came from behind and its occupants started shooting at the van’s tyres and cab. The AV was forced to stop and six suspects, armed with AK-47s and wearing balaclavas and gloves, forced the driver and crew out of the cab, taking their Girsan firearm and one cellphone,” she said.

Sekgotodi also said the suspects forced the members to hide as the AV was bombed twice. The suspects eventually fled the scene. The G4S members returned from their hiding places and found community members looting some of the money lying around. The driver contacted their office to report the incident. An unknown amount of cash was taken.

The community is assured that all information provided will be dealt with confidentially.

Members of the public are being warned to refrain from tampering with crime scenes as they expose themselves to danger such as unexploded explosives. They also contaminate the crime scene, which can jeopardise future court processes.
