Mbombela’s streets left in night-time darkness
Some of the street lights remain unattended to despite being reported to the City of Mbombela, and some residents now demand that the municipality repairs them urgently.
Despite continuous requests from taxpayers and road users to repair non-functional street lights, the City of Mbombela (CoM) still has done nothing to improve the situation.
The lights on the R40, Dr Enos Mabuza and Samora Machel drives next to the Nelspruit Rugby Club, the Kaapsehoop Road and Nel Street leading to the CoM’s offices are all defective.

According to a ward councillor in Mbombela, Thea Rix, the street lights have been off for some time, and little or no action has been taken to improve the situation.
“These issues had been reported to the CoM’s technical services on several occasions, but nothing has been done. Even the street lights on Nel Street, leading to the municipality’s offices, are not working. These roads are used by municipal officials on a daily basis; yet they are not even attending to them,” she said.

Some residents told Lowvelder that the non-functional street lights are aiding criminals. The community members demanded that the municipality repair the streets light urgently.
The paper sent media enquiries to the CoM’s spokesperson, Joseph Ngala, last Monday, asking when the street lights would be repaired and why they are still not working. Ngala had not responded by the time of publishing.
